River Foulness

The river’s  source is on the northern side of Shiptonthorpe, it then flows southward on the eastern side of that village then turns southwest meandering through Harswell and to the north and west of Holme-on-Spalding Moor then turns southeast, forming the southern boundary of the parish, running through Welham Bridge and to the south of Bursea and Hasholme.  There are a number of tributaries running into it and today the River Foulness feeds into the Market Weighton Canal.

Its name is derived from Old English fūle[n] ēa, meaning “dirty water”.
